Could could the administration have done something to help?
Yes. They could have asked me this question.
Everyone told me what they thought I should do, or what they had done in what they thought was a similar situation (solipsism?), but no one bothered to ask me what help I needed.

The administrators were good about asking if I had any questions. But it was a hollow gesture.
"I'm not going to support you for tenure. Look for another job elsewhere. Do you have any questions?"
How can I have questions for them, when they had no questions for me, showed no interest in me.* Not even an interest in knowing what went wrong.
